You Know you are a Weather Geek When.....

You take photos of a thunderstorm from the plane and find it on the in-flight radar AND take pictures of it ( along with Jim Cantore). I was flying to Los Angeles on Wednesday and took this shot of a super cell in the mid section of the country. It was pretty amazing to see right where the storm ends. I was amazed to get the Weather Channel from 41,000 feet. Got to love Satellite!

New York Winter Bites Back

Cold Freeze.gif This past weekend we could easily forget that it was still winter. High temperatures on Saturday hit near 60 in Central Park. That is all history as Arctic air makes a come back to the area. The frigid cold that gripped the Northeast in February is back. Cold air over the eastern Great Lakes will send temperatures plummeting this afternoon with sporadic snow showers. Most of the cold air will reach the rest of the Northeast tonight. Winds will be out of the North West at 20-30 MPH. Tuesday will rival the bitterly cold days of February for the title of the coldest day of this winter. Wind chill advisories are posted for portions of New York State, as well as snow and blowing snow advisories and winter weather advisories. Another chance of snow moves into the interior Northeast Tuesday, and across most of the region (except Northern New England) on Wednesday.

Total Eclipse of the Moon Saturday

Total Eclipse of the moon Lunar Eclopse.jpg The weather should be nice tomorrow for most of us to get a nice view of the total eclipse of the Moon. We should see darkening of the Moon about 4:30 p.m. The total eclipse will be underway about 5:45 p.m. The full moon will return to normal brightness about 8:15 p.m. Although telescopes are useful, they're not actually needed for viewing such an event.
Unlike solar eclipses, which are dangerous to view with the naked eye, it is completely safe to watch a lunar eclipse because it is far dimmer. Looking directly at an eclipse of the Sun can cause permanent eye damage, even blindness.

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, blocking the flow of light that normally illuminates the moon's barren surface. In contrast, during a total solar eclipse, it's the Moon that glides between the Earth and Sun. Blocking sunlight makes day seem to turn into night here on Earth.

There's a chance the Moon will turn red – even bright red – during the coming total eclipse. This reddening is caused by pollutants, haze or clouds in the Earth's atmosphere altering the color of the sunlight reaching the Moon.
