Is it Winter? Cherry Tree in Brooklyn Blossoms

According to the New York Times and the picture above, a lone cherry tree in the Brooklyn Botanical gardens displays its flowers in an early spring bloom. The weather this December has been exceptionally warm with the average temperature almost five degrees above normal, according to the National Weather Service. Perhaps this is a tell tale sign of winter, or not?
