Violent Thunderstorms Roll Through NYC

This afternoon, ahead of an approaching cold front, a line of severe weather formed just south of the New York City Metropolitan area. An interesting discussion with this storm was that the line of cells that formed just over sandy hook seemed to have grown not only in diameter but in length as well and remained somewhat stationary. The storms moved north, but with little or no westward or eastward movement. There were times when the East side was sunny and the west side was torrential with rain. Violent thunder and cloud to ground lightning was seen and heard from Tribecca to Harlem. I took these shots from my office in the Empire State Building on the 55th floor. It was unreal.

Ocean Temps Heat up, and so does the Fishing

Lately, I have been heading out to Fire Island Thursday nights and working remote on Friday. Working Fridays out here is really nice. I tend to get a lot of work done and it alleviates the stress of commuting during a rather hectic time period. I woke up early this morning around 5:45 and ventured over to the calm Atlantic waters. The sun was just rising and the skies looked gorgeous. Check out photo below for the sunrise. The water was really warm. It caught me by surprise because last week the temps were hovering around 62. I checked out the satellite thermal data when i get back and found that temperatures have risen to around 67. The fish are jumping and the birds are going nuts. It was the first time of the season I saw any type of activity and the first time I actually caught something. A small bluefish, but still something. Thunderstorms and showers are supposed to persist throughout the weekend which should make the fish bite!

Friday will be the start of the weekend where the instability will play a signficant factor. A cold front will enter today and provide the region with plenty of rain and thunderstorms. Some of the storms may be potentially severe with damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours. This is just the beginning as the front stalls over the region while a broad upper trough to the west sends disturbances along the boundary resulting in bouts of rain and thunderstorms through the weekend and into next week.

Thunderstorms Today

An upper-air disturbance approaching the Northeast today will help fire off scattered showers and thunderstorms over the vast majority of the region. Temperatures will be well above average in New England southward through the Delmarva Peninsula, and near seasonal averages elsewhere.
